Day 1: Journey to the Inca Trail and Arrival at Machu Picchu

Our exciting journey on the Inca Trail begins early with a departure from Cusco around 04:00 am. We’ll embark on a scenic drive through the breathtaking landscapes of the Sacred Valley.

Ollantaytambo Train Station – The Start of Your Adventure:

After about an hour and a half, we arrive in Ollantaytambo, where we board the train to Kilometer 104, the starting point of the Inca Trail. This two-day trek offers a condensed but equally captivating version of the classic 4-day Inca Trail.

Exploration and Natural Beauty:

Our route leads us through captivating Inca sites, showcasing the rich history of this ancient civilization. Along the way, you’ll be enchanted by the diverse flora and fauna, as well as the breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains.

Winay Wayna and the Sun Gate:

We’ll hike 10 kilometers, starting in the Sacred Valley, and follow a well-preserved Inca trail to the remarkable Winay Wayna archaeological site. From here, we’ll proceed to Machu Picchu via the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku). A delightful box lunch will await you after exploring Winay Wayna.

Descent to Machu Picchu and Arrival:

In the afternoon, we’ll reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and be greeted with our first awe-inspiring view of Machu Picchu, gracefully set against the mountain backdrop. The softer afternoon light creates perfect conditions for photography, with fewer tourists around to share this moment.

Guided Tour and Exploration:

After passing through the Sun Gate, a 45-minute hike will take us to Machu Picchu itself. Your visit will begin with a stop at the Guard House, offering an opportunity for an iconic postcard photo of Machu Picchu. This spot is blissfully uncrowded, enhancing your experience.

Exploration and Overnight in Aguas Calientes:

You’ll exit Machu Picchu to use the facilities before re-entering at 15:00 for a 1.5-hour guided tour of this magnificent site, ensuring you don’t miss any of its most significant features. After your exploration, we’ll catch the 16:30 bus to Aguas Calientes, where dinner awaits.

Breakfast and Journey to Machu Picchu:

In the morning, we’ll have breakfast at 05:00 am. We’ll then take the bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. You’ll need to present your original passport and entry ticket to enter the site. Your guide will take you through the various sites, ruins, and important temples of Machu Picchu between 08:00 and 10:00.

Optional Activities:

You’ll have ample time to undertake one of the following optional activities (not included in the price):

  • Climb Huayna Picchu (2 hours round trip) or Machu Picchu Mountain (3 hours round trip) for stunning views from above.
  • Another optional activity in Aguas Calientes might include visiting the new local museum or enjoying a relaxing bath in the hot springs.

Return to Cusco:

After enjoying the magnificent Inca city, you’ll use your bus ticket to descend to Aguas Calientes and then take the train back to Cusco via Ollantaytambo. The “Expedition Train” departs at 18:30 and arrives in Ollantaytambo after 2 hours. In Ollantaytambo, a van will be waiting to take you to Cusco. Your journey will conclude around 22:30, ending your incredible two-day adventure on the Inca Trail.
